Tell us about your favorite way to get lost in a simple activity — running, chopping vegetables, folding laundry, whatever. What’s it like when you’re in “the zone”?
Most mornings I like to get up & make what I call my ‘Zen Salad’.
My husband introduced me to the concept of eating salad for breakfast, before I met him breakfast tended to be a bowl of cornflakes, a slice of toast or even just coffee. Once my kids had grown up I just couldn’t be bothered to make myself anything special.
When I first stayed with him at his home I was surprised to be presented with a freshly made salad for breakfast & along side it, on the table were toasts & various fresh spreads, such as humus (chickpea & sesame paste), hatzilim b’mayonnaise (eggplants in mayonnaise) & Labaneh (an Arabic soft cheese).
I was very impressed & soon noticed the benefits of a healthy start to the day. I quickly developed my early morning salad making skills & found I enjoyed doing it more & more each time I prepared one.
It has now become a morning ritual for me & I delight in selecting fresh vegetables of various textures, colors & tastes, & mixing them together with herbs, oil & lemon juice, all fresh, until I have a beautiful, colorful & positively glowing bowl of salad.
While I’m doing this my husband often tries to speak to me & sometimes tries to give me a kiss or a hug but his efforts are in vain because while I’m in Zen Salad mode I am in a completely different world. I become totally engrossed, the chopping board is my palette, the salad bowl is my canvass & I am oblivious to everything until my masterpiece is complete.
