Poetic Challenge: Judgement, Justice & God

In response to Iam Who Iam’s  weekly  poetic challenge for this week …

I have made my very first attempt at ‘Unrhymed Iambic Pentameter”, aka  “Blank Verse”.

I have been musing to my husband about experimenting with some classical poetic styles

& this was the perfect opportunity to give it a try.

You can read more about this specific style here …

Poetic Challenge: Blank Verse,

& read Iam Who Iam’s own contribution here …

Blank Verse About Source of My Morals

I really, really enjoyed myself.

At first the urge to rhyme was overwhelming but as I let go the words started to flow,

the whole exercise became quite passionate & I actually found it hard to stop.

OK, here it is.

No snickering now.

Judgement, Justice & God

Awakening

The need to try to judge my fellow man.

What folly could be worse & yet I err

in that direction time & time again.

*

When’er I hear of some injustice done

the need for balance fills my outraged heart.

*

A violent act against a tiny child,

makes violence flare inside my troubled mind.

*

Religious persecution makes me scream.

How dare they thus, & say “It’s in God’s name”.

*

As if God needs the help of tiny man!

As if God were some petty, mindless thug.

*

A bigot judging what we eat or wear,

or when, or where, or how we choose to pray.

*

Who dares to try to keep God in a box,

to claim that God belongs to them & they

alone are qualified to speak for him?

*

God is not so small as to be confined

by petty barriers of religion.

*

Religion created by man for man’s

own questionable & dubious ends.

*

Religion worshipping a tiny God

created by man in man’s own image.

*

God is Great inDeed, inWord, inCreed &

those who dare to speak & act in his name

might want to think again of how they’ll fare

when face to face with that which, absolute,

is truly judge & executioner

of all that ever was, is & will be.

*

The need for justice burns within my heart.

I crave the balanced flat-line of debts met.

*

But how is Justice possible for man,

who lies & cheats in every way he can?

*

A story told from one side may seem true,

but when compared with someone else’s tale

some elements may surface that will start

deliberations new & clearer still

as everyone elaborates, the frame

must grow & shrink to fit the changing ‘Truth’.

*

As Justice tries to pick her way through all,

& seeing clearly through the eyes of God,

unravels all the chaos man creates,

I hope & trust that she will find at last

the route to source & centre of all wrong.

*

Make no mistake, we none of us is right.

Our judgements flawed & blinkered at the best.

*

Our sense of Justice suited to ourselves.

Even our God is shrunk to fit our needs.

*

& so to you who read this verse I say,

“ Judge others not, just do what’s right yourself”.

    1. Thanks, I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I just took a peek at your blog & I love it. We seem to share some of the same views. I’ll definitely be back to read more 🙂

  1. Fantastic (both in content and rhythm). My motivation for the challenge was to encourage people (me included) to experiment with different poetic structures without any expectation of a well-polished finished product. You’ve exceeded my expectations by offering a poem so well-polished, it shines from beginning to end. Thanks for writing and sharing it (and I DO agree with all it says).

    1. Wow, I’m really glad you enjoyed it so much. Some poems really write themselves & that was one of them. Completely spontaneous. I think I’ve wanted to get a lot of that off my chest for a while & was just waiting for a suitable outlet lol. It was great fun & I look forward to future challenges 🙂
