La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans

I was always fascinated by this sculpture.

I first saw it when I was a very young girl & it I found it mesmerizing .

I wondered who she was, what was her story, what happened to her.

I was drawn to it & also somewhat repelled by it, I found it just a touch creepy.

I now know it to be one of 28 cast in bronze, in 1922, in Paris.

Degas originally sculpted it in wax & decorated it with real clothes & hair.

It was not received warmly by the critics of the time & was considered

ugly & somewhat depraved by some,but moved others due to it’s

seeming portrayal of  the stress & pain of ballet training on the young girl.

The young model was Marie van Goethem a student of the Paris Opera Ballet dance school.
