Do you belong in this day and age?

Do you feel comfortable being a citizen of the 21st-century?

When I was a very young child I had the distinct feeling that I did not belong. I would often fantasize that one day my real family would arrive to take me home. Sometimes they were aliens, sometimes angels, sometimes Native Americans, Ancient Egyptians, Greek Gods … I had a very vivid imagination.

As I grew older I started to feel that maybe I had been here before & that I just related more to a previous life.  Even today as an adult I don’t really feel at home & often have an irrational desire to flee to somewhere safe.  I’m not sure if it’s specifically the time or not, but many of my friends have commented that I should be living in another century, or even millenium, but which one?

My kids are convinced that I belong to another time. They fail to understand my life without such wonders as the microwave & the television. But in some ways I’m ahead of them in leaps & bounds when it comes to the internet.

My youngest daughter often says that she would like to have lived in medieval times & I remind her that ‘the likes of us’ would probably have been starving peasants or worse in those days. I have a fondness for that period myself but when I take into account the stench, the disease, the rats, the fleas … the list of disadvantages is endless.

For some reason my longings were always in the direction of the past. I’ve never really wanted to belong to the future maybe it’s an issue of security & I’m just more comfortable with the known rather than the unknown.

Of course in the end it’s all just so much romantic claptrap, whatever the truth. It’s the ‘here & now’ that matters & most of us have difficulty just being able to be present to that, let alone any other time.

Still I wouldn’t mind a peek at some of history’s most interesting moment’s. It might help to solve a lot of the world’s major disagreements.
