When I read the daily post today I was eating one of the fresh figs, that I had just bought in the market.
I always think of the emperor Augustus when I eat a fig, as it’s rumored that he died after eating figs poisoned by his wife as they hung on the tree in his garden.
It wasn’t long before I felt a poem brewing and so …
A Fly on the Imperial Wall
If I could be a fly on the wall
at any point in time,
I’d travel back to Imperial Rome
for to see an Imperial crime.
The line of Augustus was changed , it’s said
by Livia‘s dastardly deeds,
as she cleared a path to her husband’s throne
for her own obsessive needs.
To see her son rule over all
was her deepest hearts desire,
but even when he was first in line
of the wait she started to tire.
Augustus soon became unwell,
his food he feared to eat.
Figs from his trusted garden tree
became his only treat.
They say that Livia snuck outside
with some poison that she kept,
and painted the figs that hung there,
as her fearful husband slept.
It may be true, it may be not,
but as a fly with stealth,
I’d creep along that garden wall
and find out for myself
